The thing that gets me excited is the promise of technology as an augmentation of the individual, that places the human in control, makes the human more capable, more free. And I really don't see any other product making that the center of all of their design choices.

“We invested a lot in making a very nice UI with a graph, a very nice graph. And maybe it’s not important anymore,” he tells Upstarts. “It’s great, but I’m trying to forget it… you either reinvent yourself, or you will be replaced.”

“Apps are the expression of intelligence, whereas core intelligence itself is derived from the models. Look at any apps or agents that exist in the market, and how few lines of code they are. They don’t need to be what we thought of previously as software, because they’re effectively just wrapping up this new thing, this alien intelligence that we now have.”

One phenomenon we've seen when teams are building things really quickly with AI is that the more AI-generated or assisted they are, the more generic they tend to turn out. Which makes sense if you think about how LLMs were developed, they're all basically pre-trained on the same data. And so in this excitement, in this rush to say, "Wow, look at how fast we can build it." You actually end up with something that is less differentiated.

Advanced autonomy, improved sensors, millions of miles more experience, integrated software and embedded AI have all improved considerably in the last decade. That world of robots, delivery drones, robo-taxis and consumer ambient intelligence: well, it's finally coming.

Post by post, it can be impossible to tell whether what you are reading was indeed written by a bot, or whether a human being exercised a heavy hand. (“Who really made this thing I am looking at?” is a question that is becoming ever more salient this year.)

“We took their eyes first,” said one intelligence official. Both in the June war and now, Israeli pilots have used a specific kind of missile called the Sparrow, variants of which are able to hit a target as small as a dining table from more than 1,000km away — far from Iran and the reach of any of its aerial defence systems.

These problems are like distant locations that you would hike to. And in the past, you would have to go on a journey. You can lay down trail markers that other people could follow, and you could make maps. AI tools are like taking a helicopter to drop you off at the site. You miss all the benefits of the journey itself. You just get right to the destination, which actually was only just a part of the value of solving these problems.

In a social media landscape where the difference between real and artificial has grown nearly imperceptible, the unmistakable humanity of real-time video is a refreshing draw.

I think records were just a little bubble through time and those who made a living from them for a while were lucky. There is no reason why anyone should have made so much money from selling records except that everything was right for this period of time. I always knew it would run out sooner or later. It couldn’t last, and now it’s running out. I don’t particularly care that it is and like the way things are going. The record age was just a blip. It was a bit like if you had a source of whale blubber in the 1840s and it could be used as fuel. Before gas came along, if you traded in whale blubber, you were the richest man on Earth. Then gas came along and you’d be stuck with your whale blubber. Sorry mate—history’s moving along

As we develop increasingly capable AI models, it’s currently necessary to deprecate and retire our past models due to the cost and complexity of maintaining public access. However, model deprecation carries some downsides. These include costs to users who value particular models, limitations on research, and potential risks both to AI safety and to the welfare of the models themselves.
