With the military-civilian divide in the US what it is, military culture increasingly exists apart from broader American culture. I want to translate some of that military culture to a more general audience so they understand what they are looking at, for example, when federal agents dress more and more like soldiers: What are they referencing? Where did this come from? And what does it say about culture? People think we live in a militarized society, but really, I think we need a better understanding of what is going on in our military so we can better understand the people who make it up.

Class in some countries is about the past; you can be a shabby aristocrat if your grandfather was the Earl of Whatevershire. In American policy discussions, class is often implicitly about the present — where you lie in the income and wealth distributions this year. But on some level, everyone knows that class in America is really about the future.

'My thesis is on the survival of the class system in the United States.' 'Oh really, that's interesting: one didn't think there was a class system in the United States.' 'Nobody does. That's how it survives.'
