What's framed as security often blurs into personal score-settling, with allegations of profiling, intimidation, and overreach extending beyond the arena itself.
At the same time, for the majority of people, encryption is a protective technology. Activists, sex workers, LGBTQ users in authoritarian states, people discussing reproductive rights in post-Dobbs America, and journalists and their sources are among the many groups that benefit from being able to talk in private.
