If you look at where the Democrats are right now, from those you would call the more moderate ones to the progressive ones, they still are extraordinarily centrist to the point that most of them are to the right of Dwight Eisenhower, who was a Republican, of course. And what I'm referring to especially there is with Eisenhower's upper tax bracket at 91 or 92% with his call for universal health care, with all these things that coming out of World War II were absolutely centrist positions.

So this kind of circular logic of when, you know, constitutionality kind of winks on and off, depending on how popular something is, is an issue that has really kind of confounded lower courts.

I saw a reluctance among Democrats to say they had done something wrong, that they had been using language that might alienate a voter, that might get them laughed at on Fox News. And in their minds, this was a really pain-free and sensible and tolerant way of saying that they were a diverse party that wanted to represent Native Americans.

Authoritarianism doesn't look like what it used to look like. It's not your grandmother's authoritarianism. It doesn't ride into town on the back of a coup in the way that it used to, in the way that so many of us have in our imagination. This is the slow hollowing out of institutions. I can't figure out any strategy other than the Ellisons are either themselves very politically motivated to change the tone and tenor of CBS and 60 or they see more money incurring favor with the Trump administration who seems to be — I've heard — was incandescently enraged by the interview with Marjorie Taylor Green.

There was no deep state inside the Trump administration. There were people willing to speak truth to power and prevent the President from doing illegal things, not to prevent him from implementing a lawful agenda.

There was a time when our party was a thing that we voted for, and, you know, we felt psychologically connected to the party. The party wins, we feel good. If the party loses, we feel bad. But there's still all these other parts of our identity that we have that are linked to our, you know, sense of self-esteem and our place in the world.
