The cost of running AI models has dropped roughly 10x per year for the past several years, which is faster than Moore's Law ever moved. If that rate continues, the things that are economically impossible to automate with AI today become possible very quickly.
One of these days we think that we might reach what's called the chat GPT moment for humanoid robots. That's when you can give a humanoid robot pretty much any command under the sun. They will think how to fulfill the command and then they'll do it for you. And if we do ever get to that stage, um then we are in a very very different world.
Throughout history, productivity-enhancing technologies have transformed work, created new industries, and expanded living standards, even as they disrupted existing jobs and institutions.
The real worry I have is that AI is going to accelerate the rate of change in terms of the skills needed and the jobs that will be replaced faster than the social fabric can absorb. It's not that jobs won't be created. I actually think more jobs will be created. But the question is, will the pace of job creation keep up with the pace of job destruction?
