This idea of dying was actually an opportunity to return and then so in this context the zombie is this thing that can happen to you. Someone takes your spirit and prevents it from doing this return to this mythical Africa to Guinea and you're forced not only in the present life if you were enslaved to kind of toil the earth but actually in the afterlife for eternity you are enslaved and you lose your agency your spirit has lost its agency and you are forever um an indentured laborer.
Thomas Jefferson wrote the most famous phrase in American history, all men are created equal. And yet, if he bore children with Sally Hemings, who were born into slavery, it seemed like a paradox and a contradiction.
All throughout the north, black people are on high alert because slave catchers are out sort of like ICE, snatching people off the street, picking them up, throwing them in jail, throwing them in these holding pens, sending them back to slavery. Even if you were born in freedom, you felt like your life was at risk.
So they left the US in search of another slave society where they could continue their way of life with white supremacy as the social order and slavery as the economic system.
